Wireless Home Theatre Installation

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

wireless speakersIf you’ve ever installed any type of electronics, you know how much of a hassle cords can be. They somehow manage to tangle themselves in the time it takes you to turn around for 10 seconds. Ever wondered how they manage to do that? So do we. It’s one of the great mysteries of the universe. In the meantime, the best that we can do is to avoid letting those cords get tangled – by not using them. Wireless systems are becoming easier to integrate the more that people jump on board the wireless train. If you think about it, almost everything is wireless now. You can have a wireless mouse, keyboard, even computer. So why not go for a wireless home theatre system?

What are the Benefits of a Wireless Home Theatre System?

  • You’ve got nothing to hide. If you’re like millions of other people, you’ve probably at one point spent hours trying to hide ugly, cumbersome wires. Your home theatre system will look much cleaner and more professional if its wireless. Plus, you won’t have to worry about coming up with any fancy techniques for hiding those wires using fabric or something crazy.
  • They’re easier to install. You’ll still want to have a professional do your home theatre system installation because they know where things go and the best way to network things, but this means that you’ll probably pay less for installation. You won’t have to worry about wiring through the walls or stapling wires to your drywall.
  • Put things where you want them. Wires can make it difficult to put speakers where you want them. You’re limited to where the wire plugs in and how long it is. This can make getting the true surround sound experience challenging and frustrating, especially during installation. Going wireless prevents this problem entirely.
  • They’re easy to control. With technology like wi-fi and Bluetooth, you can easily control your speakers and other home theatre components directly from your couch with your phone or other wireless electronic device. You won’t even have to worry about what happened to the remote (or which remote is which, for that matter). Control everything right from your phone or tablet.

Enjoy Big Theatre Quality in Your Home Theatre

Thursday, July 17th, 2014

home theatreYou’re planning on having your new Maryland home theatre professionally installed, but you haven’t tackled the room design yet. You’re excited that the really hard work has been taken out of the equation – who knows what to do with all of those wires anyway? You’ve chosen your surround sound system and perfect screen with the help of a home theatre expert, but now you have to worry about what the rest of the room will look like and if it’s properly set up for good acoustics. You also want to get that big theatre feel in your home version. How do you go about that? Check it out!

Tips for Getting the “Big Theatre” Feel

  1. Get the most out of your surround sound – Yes, surround sound is a WONDERFUL thing. Getting sound coming at you from all angles and feeling like you’re actually in the movie is one of the perks of a home theatre system. But there’s no point in surround sound if you don’t have your room properly set up for acoustics. Drywall works well for acoustics, but if you want to go the extra mile, hanging fabric on the walls can darken the room and improve the acoustics. Avoid using any type glass for decoration (including windows) and opt for carpet over hardwoods.
  2. Make sure you can see – Putting your theatre chairs in the perfect place for viewing takes a little bit of thought. Try to get the center of the screen at eye level of the theatre seats – it’s going to be a little difficult if you have to do tiers, but aim for the center tier to be at about eye level. Make sure that you don’t have your chairs too close to the screen. If you’ve gone to the movie theatre before and gotten stuck up front with all of the screaming children, you know how irritating it can be (the close seats, not the screaming children. . .them too, though). Ask your professional home theatre installer what the best distance is for your screen.
  3. Hit all the details – The main components of your home theatre are, of course, important. You also need to remember that it’s the little details that make the movie theatre a fun place to go. Use dark colors (maroon or purple are great) and crushed velvet (or faux velvet) for walls and chairs. Add a small popcorn machine in the corner and spring for a drink fountain, if you can. Having dimmer lights installed will also give you that fancy theatre vibe.

Once the details are done and your home theatre has been professionally installed, you’re ready to pop in your favorite movie, sit back, and enjoy that big theatre experience! Haven’t made the call to get your home theatre installed yet? What are you waiting for?

Dolby Atmos to Change the Face of Surround Sound

Friday, July 11th, 2014

dolby atmosOr change the ears, rather, depending on how you want to look at it. Surround sound is one of the best reasons to have a home theatre system installed in the first place. Being immersed in 360 degree sound while watching your favorite movie or playing your favorite game can improve the whole experience. Dolby’s new system, Atmos, promises to give you even more of an immersive experience than their previous models. How? By giving you the real theatre experience. You’ll be able to get sound coming from above you now as opposed to just the sides. For effects like pouring rain and loud airplanes, it’ll be a pretty cool new development.

Speakers in the ceiling? Some people won’t be able to do speakers in the ceiling, which is understandable. Ceilings can obviously be difficult to access unless you’re building your home theatre system as you’re building your home. We can install them, but it has the potential to be a difficult process that may or may not work for your home. For those who can’t have speakers installed in their ceilings, Dolby will offer speakers that can still give you the complete surround sound experience. They’ve found a way, using physics and what we can only assume is magic, to create an audio illusion that makes it seem like the sound is still coming from above.

Sound like this has been in commercial movie theatres for a while now. Consider movies like Noah where the flood rains started pounding from above – there obviously needed to be some good effects for that. The cinema version of Atmos sound has been around since 2012 and will begin making its way into home starting in the fall of this year. Not too bad of a turnaround time, on the whole. Atmos will be flexible for people who like to customize their surround sound. Those who love to work with audio and listen to the best sound available will be excited to try out Dolby’s new Atmos system.

Multimedia Conference Room for Your Maryland Office

Thursday, July 3rd, 2014

multimedia conferencingConferencing is the backbone of any office and it’s starting to come into the age of technology. Being able to discuss something with clients and employees at once has never been as easy as it is today. Many times employees are in different offices and need to be able to conference in from long distances. It’s not always feasible for them to travel halfway across the country just for one (semi) important meeting. Luckily, there are solutions that are popping up to make it easy for people not only nationwide, but worldwide to be able to be part of a conference of meeting. Investing in a multimedia conference room is one of the best solutions to this problem to date.

  1. Bring everyone in – Many people telecommute to work today as is. Being able to join a conference from the comfort of your own home office is a huge benefit for many employees as well as employers. It saves the employee money on gas as well as time. They’re able to be more productive on the tasks that require their attention if they aren’t spending an extra 30 minutes to an hour commuting to the office. As previously mentioned, you can also include colleagues from across the world!
  2. Do more than just talk – Being able to see someone face to face in a multimedia conference room can help with communication. Consider how much you lose when you can’t see a person’s facial expression or body language. Multimedia conference rooms break down those barriers and allow you to have a conversation with a person who you can actually see and talk to in real time. You can also share and view important documents while you’re video conferencing if you invest in the right multimedia conferencing system.
  3. Easily scale up or down – Most multimedia systems are not only for the conference room, but can be scaled out to the entire office. They allow you to scale for size when your company grows or if you need to cut some spending. It’s a great way to enhance communication within the office as well as outside the office. Having the ability to add more phone lines or accounts to your networked office will make it easier to grow your company and keep in contact with clients and customers.

A multimedia conference room is a great investment for your Maryland office. You just need to find the right person to install it! At Down to Earth Communications, we know how to install a multimedia conference room that will be useful to you and help you stay in communication with people in and out of your office.  To get started with an estimate, give us a call at 410.242.0000 or feel free to contact us via the website so we can help you with all of your commercial audio/visual needs!
